More than one-third of adults in the U.S. use some form of alternative medicine or complementary therapy, from dietary supplements and herbal remedies to yoga and chiropractic. And with the rise in Americans pursuing natural replacements for—and additions to—standard medical care and prescription drugs, consumers have also become more environmentally conscious and responsible, seeking out “green,” “clean” and “organic” alternatives to conventional unhealthy and toxic foods and products.
Long before we all became more aware, this type of lifestyle was embraced by the Taoists, followers of an ancient philosophical tradition in China called Taoism, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance and harmony with nature. With roots thought to date back 5,000 years, Taoism formed the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which includes acupuncture, tai chi and qigong—three now-common components of an age-old holistic wellness system.
Inspired by Taoist ideas and practices, our guiding principle is to bring you quality, credible health, wellness and lifestyle journalism to educate, inform and inspire you to live life to the fullest in peace and harmony with nature—in other words, the Tao Life. With an Eastern bent and a global mindset but geared toward the Western way of life, we cover everything from natural medicine, holistic mind-body self-care techniques and the hidden benefits of foods and herbs to pain management, stress reduction and mindful living strategies to the latest from the worlds of health and medical research to all things eco-friendly—home, garden, travel, style and everything in between. Through a regular dose of news you can use, information-rich columns, expert insights, and visual and multimedia content, our goal is to be your go-to guide to a healthier, happier and greener life.
We recognize that wellness means different things to different people. For some, it means parting ways with all things unhealthy and adopting an all-or-nothing approach to being well. For others, it’s about being healthy while enjoying everything life has to offer. In the spirit of balance, the idea on which Taoism was founded, the Tao Life approach to covering wellness is a holistic one, encompassing physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being. Ours is a world where gym time and a nutritional diet happily coexist with the moderate intake of sweets, wine and cocktails, and where, positivity, possibility and experiences are cherished above all.
We eventually plan to grow beyond just running a blog by establishing a nonprofit educational and community-service organization with a Web and brick-and-mortar presence focused on raising awareness and promoting health and well-being, helping those in need and protecting the environment. That goal would include offering online classes, providing interactive consultations, publishing books and hosting real-world courses, workshops, seminars and retreats.
